Canasta Game Night Starts Before the Cards Are Dealt
You've invited people over. You want to play Canasta. Now what?
Good news: setting up a Canasta table takes about five minutes and requires almost nothing you don't already have.
The Four Things You Need
1. A Turn Tray The turn tray sits in the center of the table and holds the stock pile. Ideally you're playing at a square table, which gives everyone equal distance from the tray and keeps the game feeling balanced. A round or rectangular table works too — just keep the tray accessible to everyone.
2. Two Decks of Cards (108 Total) Modern American Canasta uses two standard decks shuffled together, including all four jokers from each deck — 108 cards total. Shuffle them thoroughly. Seriously, a well-shuffled deck makes for a better game.
3. A Scorecard Canasta is played to 8,500 points across multiple rounds. Without a scorecard, you're trusting everyone's memory — and that never ends well. A simple piece of paper works fine. The scorekeeper holds this all game.
4. Card Holders (Optional) Some players love card holders. They keep your hand visible without physical fatigue, which is genuinely useful in a long game. Others prefer holding cards freehand for better control. There's no right answer — bring them if you like them, skip them if you don't.

No special equipment. No complicated setup. Just a tray, two shuffled decks, a scorecard, and four players ready to go.
Once you're set up, assign your roles (scorekeeper, cutter, dealer), deal the cards, and let the game begin.
